When we look to the media for direction on what love is and what a healthy relationship is, we frequently see the grandiose acts where they propose at the Eiffel tower, or fill the girl’s room with one hundred roses. While some may fantasize about having these types of relationships, these demonstrations of affection are not foundational nor eternal. What makes a strong and solid relationship that will withstand the tests of time, are the small and simple things.
Many have heard the scripture stating, “by small and simple things are great things brought to pass”. This concept of doing the little things that create big things is what will keep spouses turning toward each other. As they apply the basic exercises such as prayer, scripture study, temple attendance, etc. This will keep the marriage focused on the Savior. It also comes down to doing things daily to turn toward your spouse that will establish consistency as well.
We get so caught up in the superficial things in life that we forget about the things that really matter. Dieter F. Uchtdorf said “Love is spelled T-I-M-E.” Our time here on earth is so precious and valuable, that when we give it to the ones we love, it deepens and strengthens that bond. When spouses make sacrifices for each other, they are simultaneously making their relationship more sacred. Part of marriage is placing someone else’s needs before your own. This sacred union refines us into the beings God intended for us to be. It teaches us to look outward and find opportunities to serve others.
A spouse is also someone to eternally progress with. When choosing a companion, it is essential to consider if they are going to bring you closer to the Savior or not. Finding somebody that helps you to constantly turn your heart and mind to Christ and vice versa will aid in being more unified. This unity will help strengthen and guide couples through their trials as they are polished into the gods and goddesses that we were made to be. We can’t make it alone. As both in the marriage turn toward each other while simultaneously keeping Christ the center of their relationship, they will be blessed with the ability to achieve our divine destiny.
