We are living in a world that attacks anything good. True Love is good. However, many would try and make the world believe that a counterfeit love is true love. Some characteristics of this counterfeit love is self-infatuation, domineering, lustful, pornographic, technologically centered, and arrogant. However, love is frequently portrayed this way in media. To the world, what I just described is normal, and that’s what makes the love so intoxicating, addicting, and passionate. But it isn’t healthy, and it isn’t true love.
Spencer W. Kimball stated “It is not love if it manipulates; it is selfishness. It is not love if it neglects the welfare of the other: it is irresponsibility…If sex relations merely become a release or a technique and the partner becomes exchangeable, then sex returns to the compulsive animal level.” This is the kind of love the world wants us to partake in. But let me show you what true love looks like. Describing true love includes eternal, pure, mature, Godlike, nurturing, real, marriage, respectful, and happy. Just typing these attributes give me so much peace in my heart and my mind. I yearn to have a love like that. A love that is patient and has no fear because it has a foundation of faith in Jesus Christ. The last word I used to describe true love was happy. We are taught that men are that they might have joy. True love is enduring through all the tests of time and trials. True love is consistent and reliable. Spencer W. Kimball also said that “Within the enduring covenant of marriage, The Lord permits husband and wife the expression of the sacred procreative powers in all their loveliness and beauty within the bounds He has set.”
Experiencing this level of connection, commitment, and care, then combining it with sexual intimacy is unlike anything the world or counterfeit love could ever offer. This is how we know that true love comes directly from the Lord. It is essential to exercise exact obedience regarding his laws surrounding procreative powers. Richard G. Scott gave insight about the intent and strength in following The Lords steps to achieve true love by saying “[One] reason for these powerful and beautiful feelings of love is to bind husband and wife together in loyalty, fidelity, consideration of each other, and common purpose.”
